The role at The Omni I had applied for was titled “Omni Care Intern.” The duration of the internship was set for the summer of 2021. I was drawn to this position because of my previous work experience in other customer service-related roles. One of the best benefits is the opportunity to come back after graduation and go into one of the Leaders in Development programs offered at any of the Omni locations. The LID program is a year-long program that offers higher pay and lets you choose one area of focus including but not limited to Human Resources, Food and Beverage, Sales, Front Desk, and a few more. Once you graduate from the program, you are now eligible to become an assistant manager or manager at another Omni.

ABOUT THE OMNI LAS COLINAS HOTEL & RESORT
The Omni Las Colinas Hotel opened in 1992 and is a four-star resort hotel located in Irving, Texas. The Omni Las Colinas Hotel was one of the first hotels built in the Irving’s Las Colinas community. The Omni Las Colinas Hotel was built in 1980 and was first named ‘The Omni Mandalay Hotel. The hotel is located lakeside with amazing views of a three-mile-long lake. The Omni Las Colinas Hotel has 421 guest rooms including a presidential suite, a governor’s suite, and deluxe rooms. This hotel has a heavy corporate clientele due to its location and various meeting spaces offered. The Omni Las Colinas also has fourteen total event spaces for corporate meetings, weddings, and other celebratory events.
In the last two years, The Omni Las Colinas Hotel has spent approximately thirteen million dollars in renovations. The first three floors of the hotel have been completely redone and made more modern. The hotel has three restaurants for dining options: Flossy’s, LRH, and The Lakehouse. The Omni Las Colinas Hotel also has a coffee shop and convenience gift shop called Over the Counter on the lobby level that is open twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week.

THE INTERNSHIP
Overall, I learned way more during the summer of 2021 than I had ever imagined I would. Skills I have acquired and or strengthened during my internship include operating a Micros POS System, better communication skills, addressing new problems and conflicts, and how to make specialty coffees and cocktails. I was able to work with other staff members who had completely different backgrounds, experiences, and differing goals. The age range of the staff members was from eighteen to about fifty years old. The majority of the older staff members have stayed with the company for numerous years which makes me feel good about pursuing this career. I felt at home in the hotel environment and after listening to the other staff member's stories about that industry, it has pushed me to stay on this path. I have always been the type of person who excels in group work activities and working in a hotel is the definition of group work.
